Ask Your Existing Customers
If you're like most businesses, you will be speaking to customers on a daily basis. Just ask your customers "what would you type into Google to find a product or service like mine?". You have to be clear here, often the customer will just say the name of your company. Whilst that may be correct, we are looking for people who use your products and services but don't know about your company. So you really want to know what they would type in to find a product or service like yours. Simple and effective. Ask five people and you have the start of your answer.
Work out what words are in use
To help drive traffic to your site, you need to rank for keywords that people actually use. Luckily for us, Google is kind enough to tell us. The Google Keyword Tool allows you to find out how many people type in keyword phrases into Google. Even better they split the results into regional (ie. country you are located) and global so you can check the stats for domestic and international customers
This means we can take the guesswork out finding the best keyword phrases to drive traffic and know for a fact what keywords to use. You can find the Google Keyword Tool here. Just type in the words you are thinking of using and Google will tell you the number of people in your region, or globally, the count of monthly searches for that word or phrase. Use the tool to ascertain the highest number of searches for your products or services and help drive more traffic to your website
